How to Describe the Reason for Leaving a Previous Job If I Was Fired
- 1). Provide your previous job information within your application materials and resume. Do not volunteer information within these documents that you were fired. If an application specifically asks whether you have been previously fired, you must answer truthfully.
- 2). State to your interviewer that you were fired from your previous job if asked directly or if asked why you left your previous position. Again, do not lie to your possible future employer. Explain to the interviewer, in the most positive light, why you were fired. For example, if the company was cutting its costs, emphasize this reason.
- 3). Explain to your interviewer the mistake you made at your previous job and how you have learned from it. By being honest about the reason that you were fired, you allow your future employer to be more comfortable with you and trust you. Explaining what you have learned from your error assures your new employer that you will not repeat the same mistake that caused you to lose your previous job.
