How to Correct False Information on a Credit Report
- 1). Order your free credit report. The Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act gives consumers one free credit report every year from the three main credit bureaus: TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. You can order your report at the site established by FACTA: annualcreditreport.com. You can also order your report from the bureau's website, by phone or mail.
- 2). Read the report and check for errors. The bureaus update their databases regularly so data may have changed since you last viewed it.
- 3). File an online dispute. The dispute form will allow you to indicate the items you're disputing and the reason. You can also file dispute online by phone or mail. Mailed disputes should include a dispute letter that details the items you're disputing, the reasons for the dispute and include any supporting documentation, if applicable.
- 4). Print your credit report if you accessed it online. FACTA provides for one free report but if you view it online but don't print it, the bureau may charge you a fee to view it again at a later date. Print the online dispute form as well.
- 5). Give the bureau time to investigate your dispute. Under the FCRA, bureaus have up to 30 days to complete their investigation and make changes. Results from an online dispute are sent via email. Results for disputes initiated by phone or mail are sent via regular first class mail. Along with the results, the bureau will include an updated copy of your credit report that shows the corrections that were made.
