    • 1). Make sure you understand the parameters of the test. The NCLEX exam is given several times a year in a facility run by the company that administers the test. Test takers must pay a fee and sign up for the test in advance. Test administrators will double check to make sure that all applicants have completed all necessary prerequisite coursework and may qualify to take the exam.

    • 2). Know what subjects are tested on the exam. Both LPN and RN candidates can expect to be tested on the following: Safe effective care environment, health promotion and maintenance, psychosocial integrity and physiological integrity. You will not be tested on any other subjects, even if you studied them in nursing school.

    • 3). Understand the structure of the exam. The NCLEX exam is taken while sitting in front of a computer screen. Test takers answer questions that are placed in front of them as they progress through the test. You must answer a minimum number of questions in order to pass the exam. LPN candidates must answer at least 85 questions. RN candidates must answer at least 75 questions in any given session.

    • 4). Understand how the test is scored. Most of the test items are scored on a pass/fail basis. Many candidates will not be required to complete all questions on the exam. Instead the computer will give them a representational sampling of questions designed to test their basic understanding. Once the computer system has been satisfied that the candidate has either demonstrated understanding or failed to demonstrate understanding of the subject, the test will stop.

    • 5). Use the right strategies when taking the NCLEX exam. The computer-based system starts off candidates with easier questions and progresses to harder items. Go through the easier materials quickly. This will help you feel more confident. If you don't know the answer to a question see if you can get rid of one or more answers. The fewer answers you have the better your chances are of answering the questions correctly. Don't sweat any individual question too much. You can answer some questions wrong and still pass.
