It is estimated that depression affects almost 26% of the U.
S.
population, or nearly 57.
7 adults in any given year.
Chances are that you or someone you know has experienced it.
You may consider taking omega 3 supplements as well as therapy and possibly medication.
The health benefits of omega 3 include mental functions as well as heart and joint health.
Omega3 fatty acids are well known to improve memory, mood, mental function and concentration.
For some time they have been successfully used either alone or as a complement to prescribed drugs.
In adults it has been shown that omega 3 helps depression.
A small study of depressed kids showed that they also showed fish oil health benefits.
In adults there is good evidence that depression is associated with low levels of omega3 fatty acids.
In contrast, often people with diets high in vegetables and fish seem to have a lower rate of depression.
When depression does occur there is some evidence that adding molecularly distilled fish oil as part of the treatment regime is a benefit.
The first study reported in Journal of Affective Disorders in 1998 noted the significantly lower levels of omega 3 in depressed patients.
And then in 1999 Archives of General Psychiatry reported a study of bipolar or manic-depressive patients who were given 10 grams of fish oil per day for four months.
They reported improvement in their symptoms.
There are other studies that point to fish oil benefits for depression and other disorders.
As a matter of fact, there is a lower incidence of depression in countries where fish consumption is high.
In the United States and other countries where there is concern regarding the contamination of cold water fish, many are reluctant to eat fish.
Even though farm fed fish are readily available, they have often been given a diet of corn, which does not lead to high levels of DHA.
Molecularly distilled fish oil is the best way to add DHA to your diet.
If you are suffering from the symptoms of depression, you owe it to yourself to make this a part of your recovery plan.
You will be glad that you did.
