Braces

    Significance

    • The gentle, constant forces of braces are used to move teeth. But an orthodontist is not simply moving teeth so that a client will have a beautiful smile. The orthodontist also must manipulate braces so that a client's bite is aligned correctly, and that the jaw is operating well. Braces contribute to attractive as well as properly functioning teeth.

    Types

    • Braces are a combination of wires and brackets. Brackets attach to the teeth and have slots for a wire to thread through. The archwire connects all the brackets and it's the force applied by the wire that, over time, moves teeth. There are several types of brackets used with braces. Most common are the metal brackets, made of stainless steel. Sometimes these brackets will have colored elastic around them. Metal brackets also can be gold. For those who wish to minimize the look of braces, ceramic brackets that are clear or tooth-colored can be used.

    Considerations

    • Many clients who will wear braces will do so in their teen years, but it is recommended that children as young as 7 years old be seen by an orthodontist in order to develop an individual treatment plan, especially if more severe orthodontic problems are present. The majority of adolescents will wear braces for 18 to 30 months over a single time period. But some clients will need to wear braces over several stages of treatment. These stages of treatment will be addressed in the initial consultation with your orthodontist. An orthodontist will prepare a contract detailing treatment and costs. Costs vary widely and depend on the extent of treatment as well as the region of the country. Insurance will sometimes cover partial cost of braces. Sometimes, too, other appliances, along with braces, will be necessary in order to achieve desired results.

    Misconceptions

    • Most people consider braces only for the aesthetic benefit. But straightening teeth can help create a much healthier mouth. Straight teeth are much less prone to the tooth decay and plaque that can develop when teeth are bunched together, making it difficult to properly clean in between teeth and molars. A buildup of plaque also can lead to gum disease. Wearing braces and correcting problems during the teen years may prevent expensive restorative treatment in the future.

    Warning

    • Most clients who wear braces will need to wear a retainer after treatment to keep the teeth in their proper position and prevent movement. It is also a good idea to get referrals and check an orthodontist's credentials. There are no warranties for orthodontic work.
