Have you ever had an item that you want your kids to keep their hands off of.
So you tell them it is forbidden.
Drugs, Sex, and Alcohol are some of the infamous cliches that flood our culture.
Most parents know these things are bad for their children and in a caring, but often misconducted way, tell their children to stay away from these forbidden items, OR ELSE! But it only makes these things more intriguing, and children will work their means of High School delinquents to get their hands on these items.
One of the also real, and dangerous forbidden goods in the world it that of the gun, this is often for younger children who don't know better, or teens addicted to the glorified fiction of video games.
If you own a gun, you know the best thing is to make sure that your children never play with it.
So you have a few options, you can hide it away in your closet or underwear drawer and hope they never come across it, or you can buy a gun safe, and lock it up securely, taking precautions to make sure that it is always out of their grasp.
But no matter what you do with your gun physically, realize that the forbidden is only more intriguing to your children.
Take the time as a parent gun owner to teach your children about guns.
Tell them about the reasons you own it.
Maybe you are a hunter, perhaps you like to think you are safer from burglars if you have a gun in the house.
Perhaps you are an officer, or a citizen soldier.
Sit your children down and teach them about gun safety.
You have a gun for specific reasons.
You have also been trained on the proper way to handle this dangerous piece of property.
There is nothing better you can do for your children than to allow them to share the knowledge and responsibility of your home and family safety.
If you make this dangerous item a matter of family importance.
And not a forbidden fruit but a very real and dangerous tool, that can serve you all well in the right hands, you will be doing a great service to them and to your neighborhood.
The other thing you must do, is invest in a secure gun safe.
Make sure it is of high quality value.
Search the internet, its there, you will be able to find the right one for your home and your gun.
Install the safe in an area where it is out of view of visitors, children's friends, or even your children.
As you take care to do what is right, to act responsibly and take the time to teach your children, you will be able to evade accidents that can bring with them the most grievous remorse.
You can turn a tough situation into a good one by extending trust to those who must share the burden of living with such a double sided sword.
Owning a gun can be a very good thing, taking the right precautions can be an even better one.
