How Do I Shorten a Composite Hockey Stick?

    • 1). Don your skates as you normally would and stand up with the stick vertically in front of you. Hold the stick so that the blade tip touches the floor; the butt end of the shaft should touch right beneath your nose. If it's any higher, the stick is too long.

    • 2). Mark the point on the shaft that extends upward, beyond your nose, with the marker. Lay the stick on a flat and stable work surface and secure the stick, either with a vice grip, C clamp--or use your body weight by resting your knee on the shaft.

    • 3). Saw at the marker line you drew, using long, even strokes. Completely saw off the end of the stick and rub away any burrs. Test the stick by taking some imaginary shots; if the stick feels slightly unbalanced as a result of the shortened length, glue a wooden plug and insert into the open butt end of the shaft.
