    • 1). Keep it dry. Excessive washing can remove the skin's natural oil. Once that layer of oil is gone, the skin's moisture will evaporate quickly.

    • 2). Smooth it on. Whenever your skin comes into contact with moisture, add another layer of protection. Lotions can soothe and moisturize. Spread on a layer of petroleum jelly before going to bed and wipe it off in the morning. Grab a bar of cocoa butter, pure cocoa butter, and smooth it on all over. Cocoa butter moisturizes that dry, chapped skin and smells delicious at the same time, plus cocoa butter has healing properties.

    • 3). Oil the skin down. Emu oil is a great moisturizer, especially if the skin is cracked and bleeding. Emu oil penetrates through several layers of skin and has amazing healing abilities. It can be used on the delicate skin of your face and all over. It soaks in completely and doesn't leave a greasy film on your skin. Several days of oiling your skin will yield wonderful results.

    • 4). Stay out of the sun. Sunlight can dry out your skin quickly and help age it. Apply a sunscreen when you are planning to be outside, and invest in mineral makeup which has a natural sun protection factor.

    • 5). Protect yourself. Doctors cover every available inch to keep germs at bay; take a lesson from them and cover up. Many times chapped skin can get irritated by contact with objects in the home or at work. Newspaper ink, cleaning supplies, dog dander and even pollen can aggravate already chapped skin.

    • 6). Eat plenty of foods that nourish the skin. Drink plenty of water and get your protein from low-fat dairy and meats. Take a good mineral and vitamin supplement, one that has vitamins B, E, beta carotene and some zinc.
