What Are the Labor Inductions Risks?

103 7
With any kind of medical procedure there are always some risks.
Labor induction is no different, studies have been done to see if woman who have had labor induction and how it's affected their newborns.
This study done in Belgium had 15,000 participants, all first time mothers, half of these mothers had their baby by going into labor, while the other half had their labor induced.
The mother's who had the inductions were noticed to require more pain medication, and many more caesarean's to have the baby either due to a stalled labor, or even fetal distress.
Plus more of the babies that were born after the induction had to go to intensive care.
There have been many medical reasons that the induction of labor has been used for before.
Maybe the mother is suffering from high blood pressure, or are even overdue.
In an unhealthy situation it can be pretty dangerous to live with, and that's why these medical reasons have people getting induced.
Though it was only used for medical reasons previously, there are many more people who are choosing to have an induction.
These non medical inductions have become more of an "elective procedure", and has made an induction possibly one of the most performed procedures today.
When looking back into the 80's it is shown that most induced labors end up being finished by cesarean, and run the chance of infections not only for the baby, but the mother too.
Though some physicians still do not feel that it's possible to prove that the induction was the cause of the problems, this will continue to be questioned by many for years most likely.
This was the reason behind the study that was done in Belgium, and showed the following results.
Mothers who have had an induced labor need to have bed rest, spend more time on a fetal monitor.
Most used method of induction comes from an IV pump, which gives the mother even less mobility.
Just because you've been induced it does not mean that you will automatically go into labor, that's why more and more of these procedures end by the mother having a cesarean.
Perhaps one year a more safe method will be found, but so far nothing has come up that can prevent the risks of being induced for labor.
For now you should ask yourself if you do want to have an elective induction or not.
Think of the possible problems and figure out if you are willing to take them, for not only your baby but you as the mother too.
Or you can even try out some of the natural induction ideas that are becoming popular.
Check them out; it's worth a shot if it will let your baby come into the world more safely.
Some may seem a bit odd, but at least you will still be able to move around, and not be stuck sitting in a bed, only able to have ice chips.
