How is the FUE Hair Transplant done?
On the day of the procedure at the clinic, the doctor will take you through the different steps and answer any questions you might have. He will then draw your new hairline and offer you a sedative, in order to relax you your procedure.
You will then be escorted to our treatment room (which looks like your dentist's, since we are using the same chair). The procedure follows 2 steps; extraction in the morning, plantation in the afternoon. In each step, a series of anaesthetic jabs will be administered.
Extraction: We will start the process lying on your stomach with your face down. Once the scalp is completely numb from the local anaesthetic, the rest of your procedure will be completely painless. Should your procedure be an extensive one, additional anaesthetic will be applied before the first one wears off, so you won't feel any pain at all.
As numbness sets we begin the extraction process. Extraction will take 2-3 hours depending on the follicles to remove. Some people have as few as 500 hairs extracted for a small bald patch. Imagine someone is plaiting your hair for hours and you get an idea how painless it is.
Plantation: After lunch, we will continue the procedure lying on your back with your face up. We will insert the follicles, complete with its sebaceous glands and nerves, one by one in the needed area by making a tiny incision.
Each follicle normally contains between 1-4 hairs (in some cases even 6) and it is important to know that the larger the number of hairs per follicle is, the better the density and the final result is.
At the end of your procedure a dressing will be applied at the back of your head (in order to cover the donor area that we've extracted the hair follicles from). The morning of the following day you can remove the dressing from the back of your head; no replacement is required.
Your donor site might still be a little sore. You may get some forehead or eyebrow swelling over the next few days. This is normal and is to be expected. This can be avoided and reduced by "taking it easy" and "not running around".
You should lie back rather than sit upright if reading or watching TV as this will help any swelling to dissipate away from your face. Driving or flying home the day of your procedure is not recommended, even if you have a companion with you; an overnight stay is suggested to allow you to rest before a long trip home.
