Dash lights are cute little beauties that brighten up the interior of the vehicle. All cars will have a set of built-in dash lights that are mainly warning lights. These are the instrument panel lights, which communicate to the driver when something goes wrong with the brake, battery, or engine. Besides that, car owners can install one or more dash lights for various vehicle lighting needs.

Dash lights can be mounted on the dash of the vehicle either permanently or temporarily. Permanently mounted dash lights are a part of many vehicles because people need it for lighting the vehicle interior especially in those vehicles, which are frequently used for long distance travels. Some people store a dash light in their vehicle for temporary mounting in case of an emergency.

Though most emergency vehicles use roof mounted light bars for warning, brightly lit dash lights are used by some as warning lights. When the lights are mounted on the dash instead of above the vehicle, it reduces wind resistance, which in turn converts into better fuel efficiency for the vehicle. When LED lights are used as dash lights, the vehicle interior will not get warmed up the way it gets when incandescent lights are used.

Voluntary firefighters and emergency medical technicians are allowed sport blue warning lights on their vehicles to request right of way to other vehicles. Other vehicles are not bound to give way to these vehicles the way they have to do for regular emergency vehicles. Their lights are as such known as courtesy lights and EMTs and voluntary firefighters often use dash lights for the purpose. Detachable mounts are generally preferred for such dash lights since they can then be detached and used for another vehicle when required.

Dash lights are also used a lot in vehicles involved in undercover operations since small dash lights can be mounted under the visor or windshield in a fully concealed manner. LED lights are used mostly for this concealed lighting because these are colorless when switched off and so are well concealed. LED dash lights can also be programmed to flash in a variety of patterns. Those who use LED dash lights for undercover operations generally prefer detachable mounts since it will allow the light to be detached and reinstalled in other parts of the vehicle.

Dash lights come in such bright and beautiful colors these days that its appearance is important to many car owners. Some of them change the colors of the built-in instrument panel lights to suit their aesthetic preferences. Bright LED bulbs of all colors are easily available in the market. The central control and the dash panel can be unscrewed from the vehicle, and each of the dash lights unscrewed and replaced by another bulb of a chosen color. Many DIY enthusiasts do it at home and there are also service centers that do the job. The service centers offer plenty of choices in dash lights for decorative purposes as well.
