The town was founded in approximately 55 AD when a Roman fortress known as Burrium was established there.
It was the first legionary fortress constructed in Wales.
The remains of the fortress are now buried in the southern section of the town.
The town started to grow up in Norman times when it became established as a normal civilian settlement.
