Natural Relief From Sore Throat Pain
Fortunately, many of these problems can be treated by what's readily available in your kitchen.
Sore throats are a very good example.
Honey and Lemon: Mix equal parts honey and lemon, and give by the teaspoon for children over two and the tablespoon for those twelve years of age and up.
Children under two should never be given honey.
This can be repeated as needed for those over twelve.
Sore throat tea: Place a tablespoon of whole cloves and a stick of cinnamon in a pan.
Add two cups of cold water and bring to a simmer.
Continue simmering until the liquid is reduced by half, and give one ounce at a time.
This can be repeated every two or three hours as needed.
Breathing the steam while it is simmering could relieve congestion.
Peppermint: I keep mint hard candies around for just this purpose.
It's an easy way to soothe a child's sore throat.
You can use both the sugar free breath mint kind or those red and white striped hard candies.
A cup of mint tea could also be useful.
Don't give peppermint to children under two, as it can cause breathing problems.
These next two aren't found in every kitchen, but as a Master Herbalist, I do keep some basic herbs around at all times.
both licorice root and marshmallow root can coat the throat, soothing the pain.
If you have high blood pressure, don't use licorice.
Also, bear in mind that most licorice candies are actually flavored with anise.
One thing I should warn you about.
Eucalyptus cough drops should not be given to children under six.
It's too strong for them to handle and could cause problems.
