Making a New Resume
- Your old resume is outdated and just plain blah. You need a new one with some pizzazz. Making a new resume with an eye toward simplicity, skim-ability and key words appropriate to your career could get you the notice you have been lacking. Start with a brief statement of objective that can be changed to suit each individual job title you are seeking. Individualization is critical in a tough job market.
The bulk of the resume should encapsulate your experience, listing all the vital details, but more importantly, what you see as your major accomplishments at each job. Did you create a new procedures manual? Develop a specialized training presentation? Look at those legacy projects that left a positive mark on the company while you were employed for it. Keep in mind that many large employers use recruitment software that looks for keywords in each given profession. Be sure to include terms like "ISO" and "six sigma" for example, if you are in manufacturing even if it means you just review you attended a training class on the topical key word. This one inclusion may get you in the yes pile.- Capture the facts of your educational attainments and be sure to include details regarding graduating with honors, working full time while going to school and extracurricular activities that may apply to the skills needed for the job in question. It is better to include more detail than you need than not enough. Additional training programs or continued education needs to be included on any detailed resume.
- Any other skills that you will need for this job need to be quantified. If you gained leadership skills by running a girl scout troop, say so, including how long you did this. If you are a community activist and gave speeches, include this information.
- Keep it short. Never more than 1 page for a recent college grad. Not more than 2 pages for the rest, except in unusual circumstances, like if you are a writer and need to highlight extensive published works.
