    Single

    • If you are under 65 years old and cannot be claimed as a dependent, you do not have to file taxes if your gross income is less than $8,950.

      If you are over 65 years old and cannot be claimed as a dependent, you do not have to file taxes if your gross income is less than $12,850.

    Married Filing Jointly

    • If you and your spouse are both under 65 years old and cannot be claimed as dependents, you do not have to file taxes if your gross income is less than $17,900.

      If you and your spouse are both over 65 years old and cannot be claimed as dependents, you do not have to file taxes if your gross income is less than $20,000.

      If you or your spouse is over 65 years old and cannot be claimed as a dependent, you do not have to file taxes if your gross income is less than $18,950.

      If you are under 65 years old, are not blind and can be claimed as a dependent, you do not have to file taxes if the total of your unearned and earned income is less than the greater of $900 or your earned income (up to $5,150) plus $300.

      If you are over 65 years old or blind and can be claimed as a dependent, you do not have to file taxes if the total of your unearned and earned income is less than the greater of $1,950 ($3,000 if you are 65 or over and blind) or your earned income (up to $5,150) plus $1,350 ($2,400 if your are 65 or over and blind).

    Married Filing Separately

    • You must file taxes at any income level.

    Qualifying Widow(er)

    • If you are under 65 years old and have a dependent child, you do not have to file taxes if your gross income is less than $14,400.

      If you are over 65 years old and have a dependent child, you do not have to file taxes if your gross income is less than $15,450.

    Warnings

    • Special circumstances can arise in which you may have to file federal income tax even if you make less than the minimum. Check the IRS website for these conditions.
