How to Not Build Up Static

    • 1). Use a humidifier around the clock in your house during cold, dry winters to bring the humidity up to 40 or 50 percent; this will help neutralize the electricity in your air. If you don't have a humidifier, place bowls of water next to your heating ducts to help disperse the water molecules in your air.

    • 2). Rub dryer sheets on your clothes and even your hair to reduce the amount of static electricity. Dryer sheets' purpose is to get rid of static cling in the dryer so your clothes don't stick together; it stands to reason they will help you lessen the amount of static electricity around you by rubbing them on different surfaces.

    • 3). Wear leather-sole shoes if walking on carpet. Workers in electronics often wear specially made shoes that dissipate static electricity to keep static from their clothes as well, to make sure no electrostatic sparks are created, causing a fire. It is less likely to be a problem if you work on wood or cement floors.
