Larnaca is re-built over the ancient city of Kittium which was once a foremost centre for copper trade. It is the oldest surviving city of Cyprus. The Larnaca region boasts of a stunning picture perfect setting. Located on the Mediterranean coast this third largest city of Cyprus has a rich tourism history. Larnaca Tourist Guide

Public transportation in Larnaca mainly relies on buses. The rural buses, the intercity buses and the night buses are all connected to the Larnaca International Airport. Larnaca taxis charge their fare by metre and can be booked on hone or taken from the street. Hiring a car is another option for getting around the city. Walking or bicycling through the attractive city streets is much preferred by the tourists.

Hala Sultan Tekke mosque is a significant Moslem pilgrimage place. Prophet Mohammed's aunt had died here and this mosque was built in her honour. Leisurely walk along Phinikoudes, a sea-front esplanade. This palm-lined public walkway consists of numerous cafes and restaurants.

Places to Visit in Larnaca

Larnaca Fort was constructed between 1382 and 1398 to protect the Larnaca's harbour. The British had used this Fort as a prison. The rooms have now been transformed into a museum.

Europe Square consists of several British colonial buildings like the historic Residence of Chief Customs Officer, Residence and Office of Chief Port Master, Governor's building and the port warehouses. These buildings are now the popular city museums, namely, the Palaeontology museum, the City-Museum and the Municipal Gallery of Modern Art.

Grand Mosque is a renowned religious landmark of Larnaca. Located on the city outskirts in the ancient Greek and Turkish quarters, the roof of the mosque's minaret provides a delightful glimpse of city's landscape.

Larnaca Salt Lake is a distinguishing city landmark. Lake Spiro, Lake Soros, Lake Orphani and Lake Aliki all put together forms the 2 kilometres long Larnaca Salt Lake.

Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement is a historic World Heritage Site that maintains some well-preserved ancient ruins.

Pierides Laiki Bank Museum showcases Cyprus's historic culture over the ages.
