Scholarships Available for Women and Minorities
- Black female students majoring in journalism, economics, creative writing or public policy can apply to receive the Dr. Julianne Malveaux Scholarship. Selections are based on each applicant's 1,000-word response to Dr. Julianne Malveaux's program theme: "Black Women's Hands Can Rock the World." Applicants must include their personal relevance to the theme along with career goals. Each entrant should have a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Applications for the scholarship are available online only.
- Women over the age of 40 can apply to receive the AARP Women's Scholarship. The program was created to give older women a second chance at improving their career opportunities through education. "AARP Foundation created the Women's Scholarship Program...to help older women overcome financial and employment barriers by allowing them to participate in education and training opportunities they otherwise could not afford," explains AARP. Priorities are given to applicants who have been out of the workforce more than five years, are currently in a low-wage job with no opportunity for advancement or who are raising the child of a family member.
- Scholarship awards in the amount of $5,000 are given annually by Shell Corporation to students majoring in geology, geophysics or physics; chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, petroleum, geological or geophysical engineering. Students must be "under-represented" in the technical/academic science areas. Minority students who are African American, Hispanic/Latino, American Indian or Alaskan Native are eligible to apply. Students must have a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale to qualify. This GPA must be maintained throughout the duration of the scholarship.
- T-Mobile offers a scholarship and internship program for minority students in the fields of business, accounting, computer science, electrical engineering, telecommunications engineering, computer engineering, human resources or management information systems. Scholarships of up to $4,500 are awarded each year. The amount each winner receives is based on the student's completion of the T-Mobile Internship Program. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale to be considered.
