Natural Ways to Eliminate Rodents
- Use fox urine to trick mice and other small rodents into thinking there is a fox in the area. Foxes eat mice, so rodents know to stay away from them. Fox urine is a dead giveaway in nature that a predator is near. Sprinkle the urine in various places around your home, especially areas where you see mouse feces. This technique also can be applied to larger rodents, though it may not be as effective as it is with smaller ones.
- Food left on counters or in open cupboards attracts rodents. Rodents will chew through cardboard boxes containing cereal, rice or oatmeal. Leave these items in cupboards or transfer them to a plastic or glass container. Double bag all your garbage and don't leave it out long enough to start to smell, which is approximately 2 days. Seal your garbage with a plastic lid.
- Get a cat. Or a dog. Cats are nature's agile predators, but they can only handle small rodents. In other cases, dogs can be more efficient. Dogs, however, aren't as good at getting into the tight corners rodents like to creep into.
- Place traps in areas of the home that rodents may frequent. If you find the rodents aren't taking the bait, leave the bait in an area without a trap for 2 days. This will ensure the animal becomes accustomed to the food you are feeding it. At that point, the rodent will be less cautious when the bait is placed in a trap.
