The tradition of giving small gifts on Easter came to North America in the 1700s, when German immigrants brought it with them. Children would place their straw-filled bonnets or hats outside and they would be filled with colored hard-boiled eggs. By the 1800s, candy was commonly placed inside them as well. The tradition of giving small gifts continues today, but has extended to giving toys and other items as well as plastic eggs and candy. - Create an edible Easter gift that you can make and hand out to lots of people. Make sugar cookies cut into an Easter shape, such as a bunny or an Easter egg. Bake the cookies and then frost them. For a bunny, frost the cookies in a pastel shade of royal frosting that hardens when it dries. For an Easter egg sugar cookie, decorate it with lots of different colors and shapes with royal frosting. When the cookies are finished, wrap them in clear cellophane and tie the package together with a pastel ribbon. Pace an Easter cookie cutter on the ribbon as an additional gift.
- Easter is a religious holiday, and the cross is a symbol closely associated with it, so a gift that features the cross is appropriate. Choose a cross pendant, a pair of cross earrings or a bracelet that features a cross. Choose a book mark for the recipient's Bible or other book that features a cross and has an Easter scripture on it.
- A stuffed animal is a traditional Easter gift for a young child. Choose a stuffed rabbit, duck, chick or any other animal in a pastel color often used at Easter. If you can find a stuffed animal holding a "Happy Easter" sign, your gift will be even better.
- If you are shopping for someone who likes coffee or tea, choose a coffee mug in an Easter color or with an Easter message on it. Place the mug in a gift basket, along with a small package of tea bags or a package of gourmet coffee. Include other coffee or tea accessories, such as pastel-colored swizzle sticks, sugar cubes or flavored syrups.
