Why do people suffer from constant ringing in the ears? Is this a sign of an underlying illness? Persistent ringing in the ears could be a symptom of a medical condition that you may not know about. Ringing in the ears may either be within the ear or coming from the brain.

When there is constant ringing in the ears, a host of all other symptoms follow. There are headaches, visual changes, and there may even be changes in mood and an inability to concentrate.

The causes of constant ringing in the ears vary; here are the most common:
  1. Frequent upper respiratory infections often result in constant tinnitus symptoms. The common cold and the flu bring terrible ringing in the ears, especially when there is high fever which is a sign of an acute infection. There is no treatment for this cause of tinnitus since it naturally wears off when flu and cold symptoms ease.
  2. Constant ringing in the ears may be due to an overlooked impaction along the ear canal. Very common in children is constant ringing brought about by a dislodged small object or even particles of food in the ear. Some children may not like cleaning their ears which can also lead to impacted cerumen. Removal is done through gentle suction or through the use of fine pinchers.
  3. Exposure to loud noises on a regular basis can also lead to tinnitus and sometimes even a reduction in hearing. The sensitive nerve endings of the ear are very delicate and can be damaged with the slightest exposure to explosive sounds. Some people may instantly recover from loud noises like firecrackers, a live band performance, or any sudden loud noise, but children, the elderly, and the sick may find it hard to deal with this situation leading to persistent ringing in the ears.
  4. Severe impact on the ears or on the head can damage small bones and parts of the inner ear causing persistent ringing. Trauma caused by vehicular accidents or direct blow to head may also cause concussions leading to ringing in the ears and in the head. Thus, it is very important to seek emergency consult even when you are not physically hurt after a severe impact on the head. Professional evaluation with the use of special diagnostic tools will help determine if there is existing damage to the structures of the ear or the regions of the brain.
  5. Another cause of constant ringing in the ears is an electrolyte imbalance which may be brought about by fasting or thirst. It is very common to hear ringing noises in the ear whenever you missed lunch or have been deprived of water or a drink after prolonged activity especially exposure to the sun. This is alleviated by taking drinks and eating meals at once. Diabetics often suffer from decreased blood sugar levels after taking their medication and ringing in the ears is one of the most common indicators of this condition.
