How to Convert DC to AC Power for Wind Turbines
- 1). Determine your power needs to select the correct size and model of AC inverter for you applications. If you live "off-grid" in a remote area, then it is wise to use AC inverters on a room-by-room basis and utilize DC wiring throughout for lights and DC appliances. Based on this measurement, you'll need one inverter per room that will be using AC appliances. If you are augmenting an "on-grid" power system, you have two options. For a large power generator that can power an entire home or building, you can use an outdoor inverter which can tie in right to the house's main outdoor fuse box. You can wire smaller generator systems to power individual rooms by installing an indoor or outdoor AC inverter in between the battery bank and an in-wall standard AC outlet.
- 2). Install an outdoor AC inverter to the main outdoor fuse box if your wind turbine generates enough power for a whole house. There are a number of ways to connect your battery bank to the main junction of the outdoor fuse box in a series or parallel circuit. Consult a professional electrician to select the most efficient method based on your power needs and preferences.
- 3). Use indoor AC inverters for houses wired with DC outlets. The AC inverter changes the electrical current and in that process some of the energy is lost. AC inversion uses power faster than DC alliances will. Where possible, use DC light fixtures or bulbs in regular lamps. Use a plug-in AC inverter in situations where the standard wiring and wall outlets are DC. A single AC inverter with two standard appliance outlet could power a whole room if surge protector strips are used to multiply the number of outlets. Similarly, small indoor AC inverters can be wired to a rooftop or any nearby generator that provides enough power for a singular room inside the wall to a standard AC wall outlet.
- 4). Convert regular AC lamps to run off of DC power outlets by changing to a DC bulb. By lowering the number of appliances that need to be plugged into AC power outlets, you are making more efficient use of your generator system and in some cases saving money on AC inverters.
