How to Change Gears in a Tractor-Trailer
- 1). Start the engine of the tractor-trailer.
- 2). Push in on the clutch pedal and shift the truck into gear.
- 3). Let out on the clutch to engage the the gear that you just shifted into. If you are starting from a dead stop, press on the accelerator and let out on the clutch pedal at the same time until you feel the transmission engage and you start moving.
- 4). Press in on the clutch to disconnect the clutch and pressure plate from the transmission.
- 5). Shift out of the gear you are in and leave the shifter in neutral.
- 6). Let off the clutch pedal.
- 7). Press the clutch pedal in again and press on the accelerator while shifting into the next gear. Do not force the shifter into gear. When the engine is spinning at the proper speed that allows the gears to be lined up, the shifter will easily shift into the next gear.
- 8). Let the clutch pedal out to engage the gear you just shifted into.
