Pig Roasting - Cultural Congruity?

A special event that involves the grilling of an entire hog is widely known as a pig roast. For this purpose, a male pig is bred for consumption - a so called piglet. Pig roasting is quite popular in the American Deep South and there this event is known as "pig pick in". It is also a regular occurrence in Cuba and The hawaiian islands.

Cuban households have this tradition of giving their acquaintances and family members a roasting of a whole piglet on important occasions like Christmas and New Years' eve. While the people residing in Hawaii hold the events on the occasion of memorial's day. Actually, it is the national dish of Puerto Rico. To add more flavour to this dish, it is served together with arroz corn granules - a great tasting and old fashioned dish.

In Puerto Rico, folks celebrate New Years' eve and Christmas with the grilling of a whole hog. In the Philippines, it is tradition to organize grill them at Christmas Eve and it is considered to be a part of their christmas celebrations. They also roast complete piglets for numerous parties, weddings and other family celebrations.

In China, it is called "siu yuk" and are purchased on the occasion of virtually any exclusive occurrence or for the purpose of giving it to near and dear ones. It is tradition there to offer pig roasts as it is considered to be auspicious. For example, a whole pig roast was offered to the Jade king on the opening of a well-known chinese flick. Chinese people believe that if a pig is sacrificed then it wards off bad spirits and brings success.

Pig roasts are often decorated with spherical pieces of pineapple and cherry so that it is found more appealing and it is retained in a red package to bring luck. In UK pig roasting is known as hog roasting. Here, this event occurs in numerous occasions, parties and celebrations. Pig roasting is considered to be an important event and it is also a staple meal at special events.

Pig roast is cooked in a distinct ways at different places. As an example, in Hawaian-style when pigs are cooked, they cover a big pit with banana leaves. After that, the rocks are heated on an open flame till they are red and very hot. The heated rocks are then positioned on the pit and the dressed pig is kept on the inside of the pit protected with the other banana leaves. This is done for the purpose of taste and also for insulation.

In Cuba, the containers are kept over the ground and out of the concrete blocks. The cooking process there is typically carried out by men and it takes four to eight hours to cook the meat completely. The cooking is said to be completed when the meat is tender enough to fall off the bone. When the meat becomes that soft it is pulled off and then it is roasted to make it ready to serve for guests. In Philippines, pig roasts are stuffed with seasonings on a bamboo spit.
