How to Name A Company
- 1). Consider your company's key concepts, or create concepts relating to the industry for your new company. What is your primary product or service, and who are your target customers?
- 2). Consider your first name. First names have a history of being popular and successful company names, especially for mom-and-pop businesses. There are also some successful big companies with first names as the company name, like Mercedes or Wendy's.
- 3). Consider your last name. Last names that are too common, or hard to spell or pronounce, should be avoided. Some successful companies named after last names include Prada, Porsche and McDonald's.
- 4). Combine family names if the company has a couple or multiple partners. Good examples include Hewlett-Packard, Rolls-Royce or Black and Decker. Try not to get caught up in which name goes first; choose the name based on what sounds best and is easiest to say, read and understand.
- 5). Consider using initials to incorporate partner names. A good example of this method is A&W Root Beer.
- 6). Give spice or life to a fairly straightforward or generic sounding business name by using just the initials. This has been done successfully after some companies were already established. Examples include KFC for Kentucky Fried Chicken, or IBM for International Business Machines Corporation.
- 7). Use the name of the place or geographical location, especially if the company's vision is global. For example, Fuji Water was name after Mt. Fuji in Japan. However, avoid tying the name to closely to the area so customers do not assume you only service that area, unless you do actually service just that area.
- 8). Use an online random business name generator (see Resources). Name generators can come up with some interesting names and at least provide some ideas that could potentially be adopted as the companies' name.
