Natural Way to Get Rid of Mildew

    Eliminate the Moisture

    • Stagnant air combined with high humidity can be a real breeding ground for mildew. A good place to begin for the elimination of mildew is to clean up any standing water that is left behind in a bathroom after showers or baths. Use a towel and mop up the floor of any excess water. Keep a window open or use the bathroom exhaust fan to remove the moisture-laden air. The moving air will pick up the moisture and carry it outdoors. Avoid using space heaters for prolonged periods of time in the bathroom. The lower temperatures will discourage the mildew from getting started.

    Tea Tree Oil and Vinegar

    • While it may be a little expensive, a solution of 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil in 2 cups of clean water helps to discourage mildew growth. Place the solution in a spray bottle and shake well to keep mixed. Spray the mixture on rugs, curtains and towels. The oil's strong smell soon will dissipate, but the mixture will work for many days before another treatment is required. Spray fabrics on a weekly basis to keep mildew in check. Use pure white distilled vinegar in a spray bottle for ceramic tile walls and floors. Wipe the surfaces dry with a clean towel. The vinegar reportedly kills more than 80 percent of molds upon contact. You can use the vinegar as part of a regular cleaning routine.

    Chlorine Bleach

    • Household chlorine bleach diluted with water to variable strengths is perhaps the best way to get rid of mold and mildew. Used as part of a regular cleaning maintenance for even the worst cases of mold growth, the bleach will kill the mold and mildew immediately on contact. Pour some bleach full strength into a spray bottle and hit those areas with the worst concentration. The area will have to be flushed with plenty of clean water to remove the bleach. Follow the safety instructions on the bleaches containers and be sure to ventilate the area well.
