A famous author and celebrity once said something like, "A rose by any other name is still a rose." That may not be the exact words, but the idea is that calling something by a different name does not change the nature of that object. This is particularly true of such important exercise/training items as running shorts and running tights, or in another realm, cycling shirts and cycling jerseys.

With help from good technique, nutrition and quality running apparel, runners of the current day have managed to pull together the various parts of the body and mind to become efficient and fluid during activity. Yes, modern technology and design in exercise clothing is a huge part of running success. Lack of comfort can be a direct line to inefficient training and performance.

So What's The Point?

Running shorts made from lightweight material are generally loose around the upper legs. The newest material used in these shorts is the result of a lot of research time and money. The payoff is in keeping the legs free and comfortable during what can be a very stressful time for the body. In addition, runners sometimes choose running apparel based on appearance as well as performance.

Some consider smaller styles of running shorts to be too "skimpy" and too revealing, while others insist that a good runner/athlete should be encumbered by as little clothing as possible. The debate over what to wear for exercise, training and competition is ongoing, with proponents of shorts on one side and tights on the other.

On one side of this friendly debate are the running tights believers, who wear a tight-fitting form of long pants that reach to the ankle. They are made of lightweight, somewhat "stretchy" material to accommodate muscle and leg movement. Proponents consider this running apparel ideal for cold-weather exercise and training. Legs are protected from the elements and the more modest runners keep maximum skin coverage. (Consider that cycling jerseys are also tight fitting and "stretchy" for some of the same reasons.)

What it all comes down to however is personal preference. Many runners, both amateur and professional, choose running shorts for warm weather and tights for cooler or wet weather. Running indoors can eliminate the need for running tights, though some prefer to run outside, wearing tights, even in cool temperatures. On top of all this, the individual's health is to be considered. Comfort and health may be two major factors in the decision to wear running shorts or running tights.
