How to Sharpen a Stump Grinder

    • 1). Remove the teeth that need to be sharpened from the stump grinder. The exact method for removal will depend on the size and model of your stump grinder, so it's important that you read the instruction manual that came with the stump grinder. Generally, though, you'll have to remove the screws holding the teeth with a hex key or a screwdriver.

    • 2). Bolt down the bench grinder to a sturdy work table. Instructions for how to do this on your specific model bench grinder will be in the instruction book that came with it. One side of the bench grinder will have the grinding wheel that you'll be using, and the other side will have a wire wheel used for cleaning and polishing metal. Make sure the plastic safety shield is over the grinding wheel to prevent debris from hitting you, but also make sure the shield is not touching the wheel. There is also a large metal shell that houses the grinder, covering it across the back and over the top; double-check that the grinding wheel is not touching this metal safety cover.

    • 3). Fill the water pot located below the grinding wheel if your bench grinder comes with one. If there is no place to put water, keep a bowl of water next to you for dipping the stump grinder teeth when they get too hot.

    • 4). Put on safety gear. You should wear eye goggles and gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, pants, and work boots to prevent any injuries while operating the bench grinder.

    • 5). Plug in the grinder, turn it on, and give it a few seconds to reach full speed. Slowly touch the edge of one tooth to the bench grinder, gradually adding pressure. There is a small, flat shelf of metal located beneath the safety shield where you can rest the tooth if you wish, but keep a tight grip on the tooth while the bench grinder is in operation.

    • 6). Sweep the tooth back and forth slowly over the bench grinder as it spins. The sweeping motion prevents scarring. If you are sharpening for more than about three or four minutes, dip the tooth in water to prevent it from becoming too hot.

    • 7). Replace your newly-sharpened teeth into the stump grinder. Wipe out the cavities where they sit with a clean rag, lightly coat each tooth with machine oil, and replace the screws.
