Why is Suicide Taboo?

The most outrageous irreverent no holds barred comedian will tackle most topics from religion, politics, racism, sex, with liberally sprinkled expletives in an ever diminishing attempt to shock and rip the last few threads from our social niceties.
It would seem little is immune to the razor sharp tongue from the pulpit of the modern comedian.
However there is a bizarre blind sight in our culture to a phenomena that you'd think would justify more headline ink than Brad and Angie.
More people are quietly killing themselves annually than are dieing in wars.
Apart from the estimated 1 million deaths annually from suicide, there are another 10 to 20 million non fatal attempts.
We are rightly outraged by the daily news of our youth driving into oblivion.
It is sickening on a nightly basis to hear of another pointless loss of life.
Yet, almost as many are departing this world from suicide.
Statistics can be used and abused and misrepresented to tell any story and embellish any pitch and point of view we wish to promote.
However sometimes the cold hard figures are frightening to contemplate.
A successful suicide occurs worldwide every 40 seconds! Here's another.
1.
5% of all deaths worldwide are by suicide! This scribbler is primarily focused on a positive orientation towards the possibilities of a future of hope and triumph over past disappointments.
Why then the focus on a topic so utterly barren of fun or hope? The sense of impotency in being able to impact such a prevalent and viral scourge is counter balanced by the sense that perhaps there maybe some tiny antidote in getting the topic out of the shadows.
Talk may be cheap, but awareness, generally precedes action.
This article has absolutely no foundation in medical or psychological science.
It would amount to extreme hubris to pontificate on possible solutions to such a massive social phenomena.
If however a ripple can be created that can build some momentum, perhaps eventually the travesty of the deafening silence that surrounds this topic may be confronted.
What are the warning signs that indicate Suicidal Tendencies? Expressions of hopelessness and helplessness.
Strong feelings of shame and guilt.
Dramatic personality change.
Lack of interest in the future.
Any combination of observable feelings, such as, depression.
anxiety, shame.
guilt, desperation, despair.
The perfect storm would appear to be a combination of Social Isolation, inurement to pain and feelings of burden to others.
What then can we do? A starting point might be to just attempt to connect in a non-judgmental manner, perhaps with those who least fit our comfortable social scene.
Of course suicide is primarily a factor of mental illness.
That is not easily cured by a chat and cup of tea, but perhaps just occasionally some poor soul, just needs a little acknowledgment to nudge them back into the social fold and help them feel integrated.
If that poor soul is you, just reach out, suicide might be a taboo subject, but that doesn't mean that society doesn't care.
