What Does HDL Stand For?

104 5

    Function

    • HDL cholesterol is known as the "good cholesterol" because it helps cholesterol and triglycerides move into the blood stream for excretion rather than collect in the arteries forming a dangerous plaque.

    HDL Vs. LDL

    • HDL cholesterol is increased by eating healthy foods and is good for our bodies. LDL cholesterol can build up and help cause plaques that clog arteries and cause heart disease.

    Sources

    • HDL "good" cholesterol can be found in omega-3 fatty acids, monounsaturated fats, soluble fiber and phytoestrogens.

    Healthy Levels

    • HDL cholesterol levels vary by gender. The safe range for men is 40 to 50 milligrams per deciliter, whereas the safe range for women is 50 to 60 mg/dL. Physicians consider cholesterol levels below 40 mg/dL to be low, and anything above 60 mg/dL is optimal.

    Optimum Levels

    • To increase your HDL cholesterol levels, consider participating in aerobic and cardiovascular activities such as walking, biking and swimming. Maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking can safely increase HDL cholesterol levels.
