Papers, Please is an adventure thriller game revolving around being an immigration inspector in the communist state of Arstotzka.
The developer describes it as a dystopian document thriller.
The player controls an immigration border post during the Cold War in the fictional communist state of Arstotzka.
The state of Arstotzka has ended its 6-year war and reclaimed its rightful half of the border town, Grestin.
As the immigration inspector, you control the flow of people entering the Arstotzkan side of Grestin.
It is only through the documents that is provided by travelers and the conditions provided by the Ministry of Admission that you can decide whether to let the person into Arstotzka or be turned away or arrested.
The game is divided into days where each day, you have to inspect documents to decide whether to let the immigrant into the borders of Arstotzka or to refuse and reject them.
The game revolves around being able to quickly check the facts and look out for any discrepancies in the paperwork that is given by the immigrants.
With the first day of work, you are only allowed to let in those who have Arstotzkan passports and deny any foreigners.
As the days pass, there will be more complex conditions on who to let in such as work permits, entry permits and even scans for contraband or weapons.
The main tool that is used to make sure that you keep everything in line is your rulebook.
At the start of each day, the conditions on who to let in is updated in the first few pages.
The next few pages details the neighboring states and its issuing cities including Arstotzkan.
When you receive all the documents, you must make sure that everything is correct and there are no discrepancies.
If there are a discrepancy, you must point it out and interrogate them which you have to strictly deny them entry.
With each day, you are allowed to make two mistakes before a third mistake where you are penalized for your action.
At the end of each day, you receive your salary which you have to use to pay rent, food and heat.
Rent is mandatory while heat and food are not.
If you do not have the sufficient funds, you will have to go without food, heat or both and that will have consequences on your four other family members.
Overall, I found this game to be quite good though it is still in the early beta stages.
The game is quite fast paced as you are running on a clock and a deadline.
With each day, the conditions becomes more complex which requires you to take your time but be as quick with each immigrant as one less can mean not having food or heat for your family.
It is available on Windows and Mac and a possible release on Steam in the future.
