Round 21
Manly Sea Eagles vs Brisbane Broncos
Stadium: Brookvale Oval, NSW
Date: Friday 01 August 2014
Time: 19:45PM (AEDT)
Manly will be looking to confirm their favouritism for the minor premiership with a win against rivals Brisbane but Anthony Griffin's men need to record a victory to avoid slipping out of the eight for the first time since the season hit its straps.
Jorge Taufua has been named to return for Manly on the wing in place of Cheyse Blair but who knows if he will return after being a late withdrawal in three of the last five weeks. Daniel Vidot and Jack Reed join the Broncos side for Lachlan Maranta and Jordan Kahu.
Manly have dominated Brisbane in recent years, winning 9 of the last 12 meetings between the two sides. The Broncos won 36-10 when the two teams met in Round 12 but wins have been few and far between. Six of the last 10 between the two sides have hit 40 points bit none has broken 50. Brisbane and Manly have played four finals with Brisbane winning three but Manly won the 2011 preliminary final. Brisbane have won just twice in Sydney over the last two decades against Manly.
Manly are the premiership front-runners with the second top differential at +130 and the second best defence to go with the third top attack. They have won their last three and six of their last seven with all wins by eight points or more. They have broken 20 in all six of those wins. They are riding a seven-game winning streak at Brookvale with their average winning margin at the ground 17.57 over that time. They are 9-2 against teams outside of the top six. Brisbane's form has fallen away of late with just one win in their last five - a gutsy 28-22 win at home to the Kiwis. They are now eighth on the ladder with a +60 differential (5th), the fourth rated attack and the fifth ranked defence. Brisbane are 5-4 on the road this year but are just 2-4 against top six teams this year.
There is no more salivating matchup across the paddock than Daly Cherry-Evans' battle with rival halfback Ben Hunt. The two are locked in firm competition - for the Maroons halfback spot and potentially for the Brisbane No.7 with Cherry-Evans being courted heavily by the Broncos. Hunt led the Dally M Medal before counting went behind closed doors. Hunt has a combined 24 tries and assists to Cherry-Evans' 16 but the Manly seven has more poise and will be looking to win another game for his Sea Eagles.
Players List:
SEA EAGLES: Brett Stewart, Jorge Taufua, Jamie Lyon, Steve Matai, Peta Hiku, Kieran Foran, Daly Cherry-Evans, Josh Starling, Matt Ballin, Brenton Lawrence, Anthony Watmough, Tom Symonds, Jamie Buhrer.
Interchange: Jesse Sene-Lefao, Tyson Andrews, James Hasson, Jason King.
BRONCOS: Josh Hoffman, Daniel Vidot, Dale Copley, Justin Hodges (capt), Jack Reed, Ben Barba, Ben Hunt, Josh McGuire, Andrew McCullough, Corey Parker (capt), Alex Glenn, Matt Gillett, Sam Thaiday.
