Why Would an Inmate Be Moved From One Unit to Another in Texas?

    Protection

    • At times, inmates will be incarcerated with others who wish to do them harm. These dangers can be brought on by the presence of diverse racial groups, rival gang members or simply the violent tendencies of certain inmates. For example, child molesters and so-called "snitches" who testify against others are often prime targets for other inmates. In such situations, it is often easier to move the targeted inmate than to move multiple, potential attackers.

    Inmate Safety

    • In the event a planned attack is brought to the attention of the correctional staff, they may opt to move the suspect or suspects to separate areas -- including solitary confinement -- to protect the victim and mitigate collusion between inmates.

    Guard Safety

    • If a planned attack on guards, an escape attempt, or a potential riot comes to light that may jeopardize the safety of the correctional staff, the prison will immediately be locked down and, following an investigation, those deemed responsible may be moved to discourage future attempts and collusion.
