How to Construct a Box for Bait Worms
- 1). Place one of the 4 foot-long boards on a flat surface like a work table or tool bench.
- 2). Place another 4 foot plywood sheet on its side against the board laying flat. This will be one side of the box. Screw the boards together. Place a screw every 4 inches, starting ¼ inch from the edge.
- 3). Repeat step 2 for the other side of the box.
- 4). Reinforce the sides with two 2 by 2 boards on each side. Screw the boards to the sides and bottom with a screw every 4 inches.
- 5). Slide the 3 by 3 plywood pieces on the ends. Screw them to the bottom and the 2 by 2 pieces on the box, in the same manner as above. At this point you have a box with no lid.
- 6). Screw one slide of each hinge to the side of the box. Place the last 3 foot by 4 foot section on the top of the box and attach the other side of the hinges to this piece. Attach the handle or latch for the box.
- 7). Fill the box half to three-quarters full with dirt or soil. Dampen the dirt but do not soak it. Put fruit and vegetable trimmings, coffee grounds or uncooked cornmeal and oatmeal into the box. Mix the soil and food until it is mixed well.
- 8). Place the worms in the box. Moisten the soil on a regular basis and add food two to three times a week depending on the amount of worms you have. The box should be kept in a cool environment; however, if the temperature drops below 40 degrees, place hay or straw around the box to hold the heat in.
