    • 1). Remove all items that may interfere with your ability to stain the old fir coffered ceiling.

    • 2). Cover all flooring with plastic drop cloths, then cover those with heavy-duty fabric drop cloths.

    • 3). Affix the bucket hook to the handle of the 2-gallon painter's pot. Fill the pot halfway with wood stain.

    • 4). Position the step ladder in one far corner of the room. Ascend the ladder with the painter's pot in hand. Attach the 2-gallon painter's pot to the ladder by affixing the bucket hook to one of the holes in the top of the ladder.

    • 5). Apply a thin coat of stain to the coffered ceiling using a 4-inch oil-based paintbrush. Brush with the grain of the wood and never against it.

    • 6). Continue applying stain to as much of the coffered ceiling as you can reach. Detach the bucket hook from the ladder and descend the step ladder with the painter's pot in hand.

    • 7). Set the painter's pot down on the floor and move the ladder a few feet so you can reach the next portion of raw, unstained ceiling. Repeat steps 4, 5 and 6 until the entire coffered ceiling is coated in stain.
