Canoeing on Sugar River in Wisconsin
- 1). Select an entry point and canoe rental company. There are several places along the river where you can rent canoes, life jackets, and other gear. Broadhead and Albany are the most popular points of entry.
- 2). Determine how long you will be on the water, and where you'd like to come out of the river. Most rental companies provide return transportation for tired paddlers.
- 3). On the day of your trip, dress in active clothing or a bathing suit. Sunscreen is recommended. Wear shoes that can get wet and will stay on your feet.
- 4). Paddle downriver.
- 5). Portage around dams and trees. There are two dams in the river, one at Albany and one at Decatur. You will need to get out of the river and carry your canoe down stairs at Albany. The dam at Decatur may be avoided by using the mill race waterway. In the lower river, you may need to portage around fallen trees.
- 6). When you get to your destination, take the rental company van back to your starting point.
