How to Harvest Taro Root
- 1). Cut back the plants when the foliage begins to die back. Harvest taro in the fall in most areas, or approximately eight months after planting in tropical and subtropical locations.
- 2). Loosen the soil around the base of the plant with a spade or handheld gardening fork. Dig into the soil around the plant and avoid piercing the root as you loosen the soil.
- 3). Pull the taro root from the loosened soil. Rinse away the mud and soil on the root surface.
- 4). Break the smaller offset corms from the main root. Store these in moistened sand in a cool location for planting next year. Use the main root immediately or store it in the refrigerator for up to one week.
