A flower garden brings beauty and value to a property and can be a joy to the gardener in charge of nurturing and gathering the flowers. Plants and their flowers are even more valuable when they bring sweet scents during blooming, and indoors, in vases. For a fragrant garden, shoot for some specific flowering plants. - Montly feedings encourage big, healthy blooms on rose bushes.bouton de rose rose image by Jean-Michel POUGET from Fotolia.com
When a gardener thinks of sweet-smelling flowers, roses generally top the list. Although they won't scent the entire garden, roses bring with them a deep floral scent when they're brought close, and also provide a wide range of color choices in the garden. Plant roses in spring, in areas that get at least six hours of full sun every day. Choose sites that drain completely after a rain, as roses will suffer in standing water, and add a combination of quick-draining soil and hearty organic compost to the site. Add fish emulsion, bone meal or blood meal at planting to give the roses a boost from the start, and maintain roses with weekly waterings of 2 to 3 inches and monthly feedings. - Honeysuckle is a common fragrance for candles and perfumes.Wild Honeysuckle 2 image by DelB from Fotolia.com
Green Zone Life calls honeysuckles vigorous, easy to grow, long-living and heat tolerant and notes the plant's overwhelmingly sweet smell. These are vining plants that require a trellis or wall, but will scent the entire yard and draw butterflies, bees and hummingbirds with the right care. Honeysuckle flowers through the summer in yellow and white, and features green vines that can grow up to 20 feet in length. These are relatively hardy plants that survive down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit, but prefer full sunshine and adequate water for full growth. Keep honeysuckle plants in quick-draining soil and sunny locations to encourage blooming during the summer season. - Petunias give off an obvious, sweet scent when they bloom.petunias-white image by Jeffrey Zalesny from Fotolia.com
According to the University of Minnesota Extension, petunias are popular annuals for their bright, lively blooms and luscious scent. Plant grandiflora, multiflora, milliflora or ground cover petunias in reds, whites, pinks, oranges, yellows or purples, according to your personal taste, and enjoy a summer of bright blooms and high fragrance. The University of Minnesota Extension states that the most important aspects of growing petunias are the correct soil and location; these plants require quick-draining soil with organic material mixed in, and must have full sun for full blooming. Water petunias weekly and use 8-8-8 or 10-10-10 fertilizer in spring and midsummer to encourage bigger, more fragrant blooms.
