  Butte, Montana, is a small town known for its colorful mining history. While the glory days of mining are now part of its significant past, Butte continues to offer many historical attractions for both locals and visitors. As Butte lies at a high elevation and sits along the Continental Divide, the general weather conditions in the town can be highly variable. • Butte spills down a hillside in southwest Montana where travelers can have a good view of mellow mountains meeting wide valleys. Travelers can pull over along the Highland Road to enjoy scenic hiking trails. They can also drive to about 9,000 feet to have a cinematic overlooking view of downtown Butte.
  
  The Berkeley Pit Viewing Stand offers a stark view of the legacy of Berkeley Pit, a massive open-pit mine location known for its decades of open-pit mining operations from 1955 to 1982. The Red Mountain in the Butte Highlands near the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest also provides a splendid view of Berkeley Pit.

  Travelers can visit The World Museum of Mining that describes Butte as "The Richest Hill on Earth" because of producing about 16.3 tons of metals since its mining operations in 1880. The Montana Technical University is acknowledged as one of the best schools for training in the field of mining. Its campus is also home to The Mineral Museum, which showcases more than 1,300 classic mineral specimens from Butte's rich mining district, including a number of specimens coming from other mining areas around the world.

• Since it sits in a mountainous area, Butte offers plenty of sports and recreation activities for anyone who enjoys outdoor adventure and sports. There are many hiking, hunting and camping sites, and mountain biking spots, in many of its mountain slopes.
  
  Fishing, especially trout fishing, is popular in many areas in Butte like at the Anaconda Settling Ponds, Madison River, Missouri River and Big Hole River. There are also a number of recreation and relaxation opportunities in Butte, particularly those in commercial hot springs resorts, golf courses, RV parks and horseback riding venues like those located at the Peterson's Corrals.
