Treating Constipation in Children
- One of the most important ways to fight constipation is to make sure your child is getting plenty of fiber. Feed your child more raw fruits and vegetables (with the skins on) as well as whole grains. Some good child-friendly choices that will increase their fiber intake are popcorn, graham crackers and baked beans. In addition, try to avoid giving your child milk products for the time being, replacing them with other sources of calcium (e.g., enriched orange juice, a multivitamin). Also avoid giving your child bananas and cooked carrots, which can be constipating.
- Make sure that your child is getting enough exercise. Getting children moving can often get their digestive systems moving, as well. If your child has been recently toilet trained, talk with your pediatrician about whether that may be causing elimination issues.
- If your child is in pain, or if the constipation isn't letting up, talk to your doctor about giving your child stool softeners or laxatives. Do not administer any over-the-counter or prescription products without your pediatrician's approval.
