How to Install and Put Up Exterior Christmas Lighting
- 1). Measure the length of all building sides that you want to install lights on with a tape measure. You can measure the perimeter of the house near the ground, you do not need to use a ladder. If you want to install lights vertically, or around windows, measure these areas as well. Add up the total amount in feet so that you know how many light strands to purchase.
- 2). Plug the light strands into an electrical outlet to ensure they are functioning. Test new light strings, since they may have been damaged at the store or during shipping.
- 3). Move to the corner of the building that is closest to the outdoor electrical outlet. Place a step ladder or extension ladder next to the house and climb to access the roof line.
- 4). Insert a plastic "S" shaped light clip onto the gutter or one of the shingles. Pull back on the flat part of the clip to make a space large enough to slip the clip onto the desired location and release it to secure in place. Space each clip 6 to 12 inches apart.
- 5). Insert the end of the light strand through the hooks on the bottom edge of the clips.
- 6). Climb down the ladder and reposition it. Repeat the process of installing "S" clips and lights until you have circled the perimeter of the building.
- 7). Move to the windows or other vertical areas where you would like to hang Christmas lights. Position a ladder underneath the location. Place a nail-on plastic clip on the edge of the window or side of the building. Insert a small nail into the center hole on the clip and hammer it in to secure. Place additional clips along the vertical surface at 12 inch intervals.
- 8). Place the cord of the light string into each clip by grasping the cord in both hands and pulling down until the cord snaps into the clips.
- 9). Plug the light strings into outdoor-approved extension cords--and plug the extension cords into an outdoor electrical socket.
