    • 1). Measure the width of the area for the awning to cover. Measure from the left side of the patio to the right side while facing the house. Your measurement may be the same size as the patio, or it can be longer than the patio for extra coverage from the sun and rain. Write the width down.

    • 2). Measure the projection of the awning area over the patio. This is the depth from the house out to the end of the patio farthest from the house. It may be the same as the patio depth or it can be longer to provide extra coverage.

    • 3). Measure the height of the patio awning. Measure the awning area from the ground or deck with a measuring tape upwards to the soffit where the awning mounts to the house. Record this measurement.

    • 4). Measure the clearance of the awning. This measurement is from deck or ground up to the front top of the awning minus the amount of the vertical valance overhang off the front of the awning. The clearance is the height at the front of the awning that a person will walk under to enter the patio. The valance varies in length from each manufacturer but is generally 3 to 6 inches long.

    • 5). Write each measurement down to choose a patio awning that fits the purposes and sizes for the patio. Compare to ready-made awnings to make a purchase or have a custom awning company manufacture an awning made to your exact measurements.
