Foods That Go With Brisket
- Hearty breads make an excellent accompaniment to brisket. The breads should be fairly simple in flavor so as to add a mild texture that will cleanse the palate during the meal. Good options for a spicy brisket include pumpernickel, rustic artisan or sourdough. For a sweet side to mild brisket, consider corn bread or buttermilk biscuits served with honey butter.
- A light salad with a fruit flair is a crisp and refreshing accompaniment to mildly spicy brisket. Consider a Waldorf salad with apples and walnuts; a raspberry vinaigrette over mixed greens; or a light strawberry balsamic vinaigrette over sliced tomatoes topped with buffalo mozzarella and fresh basil leaves.
- Deviled eggs add a touch of cool diversion to the rich heartiness of brisket. For the deviled portion, use a basic traditional blend of mayonnaise and prepared yellow mustard topped with paprika. For an unusual flair, add capers, finely chopped shallots or minced roasted red pepper.
- Potatoes are a good side for any hearty main meat dish. To complement the texture of brisket, consider sweet potato fries or baked sweet potatoes with butter and brown sugar. Another side is German potato salad, which replaces traditional mayonnaise dressing with a vinaigrette blend.
- Spice up traditional cole slaw by using a blend of cabbage, carrots and broccoli stems. This crisp, fresh side is an excellent palate cleanser, particularly if mayonnaise-based dressing is replaced by a light Caesar blend.
- Barbequed or smoked brisket is nicely accompanied by grilled corn on the cob. Prepare corn for grilling by basting it with a blend of butter, cayenne pepper and red pepper for a spicy, tangy taste. For a milder version, use seat salt, cracked white pepper and sweet cream butter. Cook corn in heavy aluminum foil.
- Brisket is a filling meat, and the meal is nicely finished with a light dessert, such as a fruit sorbet, a lemon meringue or key lime pie, or a fruit tart of kiwi, strawberries and blueberries.
