Family fun days provide you with the opportunity to set aside the stress and responsibility of an average day and focus on having an enjoyable time with your loved ones. According to the Louisiana State University, families who spend time together have strong bonds and children who grow up in these families benefit in multiple ways. When having a family fun day, have all members turn off their cell phones and focus on the family unit itself.

    Play Sports

    • Sports games are good family activities because the games are not only fun, they also encourage children and teenagers in the family to be more active. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, almost half of American children from 12 to 21 are not getting enough exercise. Playing sports on a family fun day creates a safe, friendly environment for children to exercise, learn sportsmanship and have fun with the family. Choose an outdoor sports game, such as basketball or tennis. Establish the rules clearly prior to playing. Decide as a family if you want to play competitively or just for fun. Encourage all family members to be as active as possible, including the parents.

    Play Board Games

    • There are several benefits to playing board games on a family fun day. It gives parents an opportunity to instruct children about rules and good sportsmanship; the games can be chosen to fit any age group within the family; and they can even help the children in the family become better at math, according to Carnegie Mellon University. On a family fun day, choose a selection of games as a family. Read through the rules before beginning each game. During the games, encourage the family to keep a positive attitude and play fair.

    Take a Family Day Trip

    • A single day is not long enough for a distant trek, but it is plenty of time for a family day trip. Pack up and visit something nearby. Examples of family day trips include catching a local sports game, visiting a museum or taking a hike in the nearby woods. Plan your trip in advance. Have the whole family pitch ideas for where you should go on your day trip. Assemble any needed items before you leave, such as sunblock or bagged lunches. Add a creative touch to your day trip by giving every family member a disposable camera. At the end of the evening, have the pictures developed and see who took the best shots.

    Scavenger Hunt

    • Participate in a scavenger hunt for your family fun day. Create a list of common items found in your household and the surrounding neighborhood. Include items such as something sweet or something red. Provide each person with a list or break up into groups if you have a large family. Set a time limit for the scavenger hunt. At the end of the time frame, have everyone gather back in the living room and compare their items. The family member with the most items on the scavenger hunt list wins. Provide a prize, such as extra dessert or letting the winner pick a movie for everyone to watch.
