How to Change the Color of Leather Furniture
- 1). Move the leather furniture outdoors, or place plastic tarps underneath the leather furniture and on top of any items within the work area you wish to protect.
- 2). Clean the leather furniture with leather cleaner. Squeeze a quarter-size amount of leather cleaner onto a clean sponge and wipe it over the leather furniture. Use a clean sponge to remove the leather cleaner residue according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- 3). Moisten a clean cloth with a liberal amount of leather deglazer. Rub the deglazer solution over the entire piece of leather furniture, working in circular motions. The leather deglazer will remove any finishes applied to the leather material at the time of manufacturing. Allow the leather furniture to dry for up to four hours or overnight if needed.
- 4). Sand over existing scuffs or scratch marks in the leather furniture with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper. Dip a small artist's paintbrush into a neutral colored leather dye and seal the scratch and/or scuff marks. Sealing open scratch and scuffmarks will allow the leather dye to cover evenly. Allow the neutral dye to dry according to the included directions.
- 5). Cover all wooden trim, legs or detailed woodwork with painter's tape to protect the wood from drips and splatters from the leather dye.
- 6). Wear rubber gloves, and apply the leather dye color onto the leather furniture with a clean wool dauber. Spread the leather dye onto the leather furniture in even, smooth strokes. Wipe away excess leather dye with a clean cloth.
- 7). Spread a matte or glossy leather finisher over the dyed leather furniture according to the manufacturer's directions. Allow the leather furniture to dry for up to four hours. If additional coats of leather dye or leather finisher is desired, allow the preceding coats to dry first.
- 8). Squeeze a quarter-size amount of leather conditioner onto a clean cloth and rub it into the leather furniture.
