    • 1). Contact the Maryland Department of Assessments and Taxation (MDAT) and obtain the necessary forms. These forms are also available online. For example, a foreign corporation must contact the MDAT and obtain a foreign corporation qualification" form.

    • 2). Assign or hire a registered agent to act for your business in Maryland. The registered agent must have a permanent residence in Maryland. You may appoint anyone willing or hire a registered agent from a commercial company that offers such services.

    • 3). Complete the form required for your foreign business. The forms are self-explanatory; complete each line of the form with the required information. Typically, you must provide the name of your corporation, when you intend to do business in Maryland and provide the name and address of your business location in Maryland as well as the name and address of your Maryland registered agent.

    • 4). Send the completed form back to the MDAT. Include a check for the filing fee and include a copy of your certificate of status from your original state or country. The certificate of status is the document proving your company is validly registered in the foreign (meaning non-Maryland) state or country.
