How to Speak French Fast

    • 1). Dedicate a block of time each day to learn new French words and review previously learned ones. There is no getting out of this step. If you have to get up an hour earlier each day or go to bed an hour later each night, that is what you must do. Write this designated time slot on your calendar, and then make up a schedule.

    • 2). Make your schedule by designating how many new words you need to learn each day to reach your goal by the time you leave for France. Your schedule should include enough time to memorize the new words as well as practice the words you have learned in previous days.

    • 3). Sign up for the free Travel French Newsletter (see Resources, below). It is a six-week course delivered in newsletters via your email account. This course will help you learn enough French to have a great time in France. You can use it in conjunction with the vocabulary you are studying each day.

    • 4). Buy Pimsleur Instant Conversation (French), which is available on audio cassettes or CDs. Cassette/CDs are important to getting the pronunciation of the words down. This set has 30-minute lessons. You can work on them every other day if you don't have time to work them in every day.

    • 5). Borrow some movies in French from your local library. This is free and a great way to see if you can pick up on any of the words. You can also hear how the French pronounce their words and see their culture in action.

    • 6). Ask a French-speaking friend to have some conversations with you. You must talk only in French. You won't be able to say much at first, but after a few weeks you will be able to carry on a decent conversation. If you don't know anyone who speaks French, you can hire someone to tutor you.

    • 7). Buy the Rosetta Stone (French) software, which is designed to be learned quickly. Work on a few lessons per day until it is time to go to France, and you will see a major improvement in your ability to retain what you have learned.
