How to Locate the Hohokam Indians
- 1). Familiarize yourself with where the Hohokam lived. The tribe proliferated in the Salt River Valley of Arizona, at one point extending to the Gila River. Their descendants, the Pima, are members of two separate Indian reservations now in Arizona. Those reservations are now shared with members of two other tribes, the Papago and the Maricopa.
- 2). Contact the reservations where Pima Indians reside, the Gila River Indian Community in the South Valley area of Arizona or the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in the North Valley region near Phoenix and Scottsdale.
- 3). Request information about upcoming gatherings or specific relatives.
- 4). Seek living descendants of the Hohokam Indians living elsewhere through genealogical searches at websites such as AccessGenealogy.com, which course through vital records, including native American census data, to help you find specific Hohokam descendants.
- 5). Make sure Hohokam ancestors haven't been assigned a different tribe designation. The AccessGenealogy.com link in the Resources section contains a listing of 88 tribe names that may appear as sub-designators for Hohokam or Pima descendants. Some include the Agua Escondida, Comac, Ocuca and the San Francisco de Pima.
- 6). Visit the Salt River and Gila River areas of Arizona for a tour of various Hohokam archeological sites, such as the remains of a Great House in the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument.
