Diary Writing: An Effective Way to Detach Oneself From Intense Feelings

Many consider writing a diary to be an unnecessary activity that serves no purpose at all.
However, there are a handful of individuals who still believe that the habit of diary writing is quite fundamental for improving the quality of one's life.
The truth is that maintaining a record of your daily experiences serves multiple purposes.
It helps you keep a track of the important events in your life, as well as assess how you dealt with certain situations.
Furthermore, your diary may become a famous memoir that helps future generations understand day-to-day life in your times.
One of the most beneficial effects of penning down your day's activities is that you will feel relieved after having expressed your feelings on paper.
We experience a multitude of feelings every day, and certain experiences that we have often leave us feeling emotionally charged.
These emotions may be either positive or negative, but when they remain pent up inside us they tend to interfere with how we tackle other events on subsequent days.
For example, if a person feels agitated because of a fight with their sibling on a particular day, they are likely to take the same sentiments to school/work the next day, which will affect how they manage their educational/professional responsibilities.
The same can happen in positive situations too.
For example, if a girl's father returned home after a long duration; she may be so overwhelmed with joy over the course of the next few days that she is unable to focus on matters of importance.
However, if the person effectively releases all such feelings at the end of every day they would not be pre-occupied with their feelings and thoughts.
One may argue that writing a diary is not the only effective way of detaching oneself from intense feelings, as it could be more effective to talk to a close friend or family member.
The fact of the matter is that people are not always there for you when you need them.
At times they may be physically present, but not necessarily mentally involved in listening to you and giving you an adequate response.
Writing a diary will ensure that you are able to manage your emotions independently.
Furthermore, it will rid you of the habit of seeking others approval and validation.
Additionally, people are most likely to transfer their own sentiments about the incident to you.
Taking forward the same example of having had a fight with a sibling, consider a subsequent example.
The individual discusses the fight with a parent.
The parent believes that the sibling is right.
This will no doubt cause the individual to be even more upset.
On the other hand writing a diary will cause you to reflect on your own feelings and assess your reaction to the event.
It will help you realize how you can better cope with your feelings and deal with situations in a healthier way.
While a diary basically helps you to detach yourself from your feelings, when read after years it can also serve the purpose of reconnecting you with yourself and your past.
Your diary will be a cherished book that holds memories of all the most happening events in your life.
Therefore, writing a diary is a habit that can cause joy in the present, as well as in the future.
