Orangutan are tree-dwellers and are experts at swinging from one tree to another in their rain forest habitat. Their feet are very similar to their hands which gives them "an extra pair" to use for climbing.

The orangutan baby is dependent on its mother for the first six to eight years of its life, and is likely to stay near her into its teen years. As a totem orangutans represent mother-child relationships.

If an orangutan shows up as a totem for you it may be time to evaluate your relationship with your mother. Have you given her the credit she deserves for the care she gave you as a child? Or, is it time for you to cut the apron strings and branch out into a life of your own?

Because of its unique orange coloring the orangutan spirit totem shares spiritual lessons associated with the sacral chakra which include creativity, manifestation. honoring relationships, and learning to "let go"

Adult male orangutans are loners. Study and observation of orangutans in the wild has shown that orangutans are able to think and figure things out. Orangutan characteristics are closely related to human life and has much to teach humans about survival in difficult times. If the orangutan is your totem then the protection of rain forests would e a beneficial cause to support.
